The TEXAS SOCIETY OF PSYCHIATRIC PHYSICIANS has been the District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association since 1956 and will continue to serve Texas psychiatrists as their representative with the national organization. As a District Branch of the APA, TSPP adheres to the policies and procedures of the national organization, including the requirement of dual membership. Within this structure, psychiatrists must be members of both APA and a District Branch to maintain membership in either. As members of TSPP, psychiatrists will be afforded the membership benefits of both APA and TSPP.

Resident-Fellow Member ($50) – shall be physicians who have been accepted into an approved psychiatric residency training program. Resident-Fellow status shall not exceed six years, and upon completion of approved residency training, Resident-Fellows shall be advanced to General Membership.
General Members ($150-$430) – shall be physicians who have completed acceptable training and who have either a valid license to practice medicine or hold an academic, research, or governmental position that does not require licensure.
Associate Members ($430) – shall be physicians who have completed at least one year of acceptable full-time training or experience in psychiatry, and who have been granted Associate Membership status by December 1989, but are not eligible for Membership-in-Training or General Membership categories. Associate Members must either have a valid license to practice medicine or hold an academic, research, or governmental position that does not require licensure.
Fellows ($430) – shall have been General Members for at least eight years and shall have made a significant contribution to the field of psychiatry. Fellows must have either a valid license to practice medicine or hold an academic, research, or government position that does not require licensure. At its discretion the APA Board of Trustees, upon recommendation of the APA Membership Committee, may waive the requirement for eight years as a General Member. The criteria and procedures for selection and nomination of General Members for Fellowship shall be established by the APA Board of Trustees and the APA Membership Committee and shall apply uniformly for all District Branches of the APA.
Distinguished Fellows ($430) – shall be physicians who have made significant contributions to psychiatry or related fields. Learn more.
Honorary Fellows ($430) – shall be persons other than physicians who have rendered signal service in the promotion or mental health and psychiatry.
Semi-Retired Members ($215) – shall be persons who are near retirement age and works less than 15 hours per week in any administrative or clinical role or roles (i.e. across multiple settings).
Retired Members ($143) – shall be persons who have reached retirement age and are fully retired from all administrative or clinical responsibilities.
Life Status (Reduction of Dues by 1/3 for 5 years, then by 2/3 for 5 years, then Dues exempt) – Life Associate Members, Life Members, Life Fellows and Distinguished Life Fellows shall be those in their respective categories whose years of active membership in the APA plus age at the start of the fiscal year shall equal 95. No individual shall be eligible for the rule of 95 after the 2021 renewal year.
Inactive Members are members of any membership category who are excused from paying dues by the Executive Council. Inactive members shall not receive credit toward the number of years of active membership required for Life status for years of inactive status.
