Unwanted outcomes related to medications are the greatest cause of loss for psychiatrists. As we emerge from the COVID public health emergency (PHE), the prescription drug abuse epidemic likely will become a priority again for the nation and for the states. Unfortunately, drug overdose deaths increased during the PHE. Even for psychiatrists who have a long history of safe prescribing practices, renewed focus on laws and regulations and the professional liability risks associated with prescribing controlled and non-controlled substances is called for. Discussion will include issues related to informed consent and prescribing for minors.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe common allegations of negligence related to prescribing
  • Recognize the risks of prescribing for minors
  • Describe the purpose and necessary steps in the informed consent process
  • Recognize special issues involved in consent for treatment of minors
  • Implement three strategies for minimizing risks associated with prescribing controlled substances
