The 2013
Texas Legislative Session
The Texas Legislature convened in January. It will be another
challenging Session and the Federation and its member organizations will be
heavily involved in monitoring legislation and educating legislators about
psychiatric issues.
Member organizations of the Federation, the Texas Society of
Psychiatric Physicians, the Texas Academy of Psychiatry and the Texas Society of
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, urge you to become involved in the political
and legislative process to ensure that quality psychiatric care and patient
safety are preserved and protected.
To assist in your involvement in the legislative process,
bills of interest to psychiatry in the current Legislation Session may be viewed
by clicking here.
Political Action
Politics is all about relationships --
"In politics, familiarity doesn't breed contempt. It
breeds votes." (Paul Lazarsfeld). The Federation has encouraged all
psychiatrists to get to know their elected representatives through its Political
Action Task Force, launched during each election cycle. The focus of the
Political Action Task Force is to encourage each psychiatrist to contact his/her
legislator and engage in
a dialogue about quality psychiatric care in Texas. The relationships formed
with legislators will pay dividends during the Legislative
Session.
"Just because you do not take an interest in
politics doesn’t mean that politics won’t take an interest in you."

DSM-5 Now Available for Preorder
Mental health diagnostic
manual set for May 22 publication
The most recent revision of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders (DSM-5) is now available for preorder from American
Psychiatric Publishing. DSM-5, which received final approval by APA Board
of Trustees on Dec. 1, 2012, is the guidebook used by clinicians and researchers
to diagnose and classify mental disorders. It is the first major revision of
diagnostic criteria to be published since 1994. Preorders for the book will be
fulfilled beginning on the manual’s publication date of May 22.
“This new manual represents the current
science and best practices of our field providing standard criteria by which
mental disorders are diagnosed,” said James H. Scully, MD, medical director and
chief executive officer of APA. “Since the last revision, a wealth of new
research and knowledge has become available. Our hope is that by more accurately
defining disorders, diagnosis and clinical care will be improved and new
research will be facilitated to improve our understanding.”
To help people understand the context for many
of the changes, a new
DSM-5 web site
features news updates, fact sheets, videos, highlights of changes, and order
information.
The print version of the book, as well as a suite of complementary publications, may be ordered online
